Game Recap
In a game that was closer than I predicted, the Houston Roughnecks upset the DC Defenders 24-21 at TDECU Stadium. The Roughnecks rallied with 22 unanswered points across the second and third quarters, resulting in a commanding 24-14 lead. Despite a late surge by the Defenders, led by backup QB Mike DiLiello, Houston’s defense held firm. A critical stop ,1-yard shy of the goal line, in the last seconds of the game prevented the 3 point attempt and preserved the win. This win improves Houston’s record to 4-5, while DC falls to 6-3.
Final Drive

With 1:51 left on the clock, DiLiello and company take over. With the game on the line they start at their own 20-yard line. They start the drive with 9 straight pass attempts, completing four before spiking the ball with :28 seconds left to play. As time ticks down the second string quarterback is able to find WR C. Powell in the endzone putting DC 3 Points behind. To tie the game the Defender needs to convert a 3 point play. 5 seconds to play and the ball on the 10 yard line DC snaps the ball. With a pass completed to C. Rowland on a slant route, he’s brought down maybe half a football away from the endzone. Following the unsuccessful 3 pointer, Defenders elect for an 4th and 15 (alt onside kick) attempt. Pass is incomplete to C. Rowland with zeros on the clock.
What’s the Problem
The biggest issues for the Houston Defense has been the defense falling apart in the second half. Specifically, not being able to keep the opposing team out of the endzone. Since week 7 Houston's D has allowed 49 points to the Panthers, Stallions, and Defenders. 49 points in just the second half of those games. They have fallen apart in a similar fashion in each game. They had a lead going into halftime and let teams walk up and down the field to get close or take the lead. I'm not sure if it is their lack of execution to really point the finger at or if it's their lack of ability to overcome halftime adjustments. Either way the defense was playing poorly and needs to be able to make their own adjustments as the game goes on.
Final Opponent

In their final week, Houston (4-3) has the opportunity for redemption against the Michigan Panthers (6-3). Kickoff will be on Saturday, May 31st at 3:00 PM EST. Michigan will host the Roughnecks for the final week of the regular season.
The Panthers, holding a 6–3 record, have already secured a playoff spot and are aiming to finish strong before their conference championship game against the Birmingham Stallions on June 8 . In contrast, the Roughnecks, with a 4–5 record, are out of postseason contention but are looking to end their season on a high note. The Panthers' offense, led by quarterback Danny Etling and running back Tua Taua, will look to exploit Houston's defense, while the Roughnecks aim to play spoiler and build momentum for the future. This game offers a compelling conclusion to the regular season, showcasing teams with differing stakes but equal determination.
Next Mission
The Roughnecks have an opportunity to bring their record to 5-3. With the assumption that the Panthers will only be playing their starter for one half if at all. Michigan has already punched their ticket to the postseason, so for them it's about staying fresh and healthy. Hoouston is in the same situation as they were last week when they faced the Defenders. However, this should not be seen as a definite win. Like last week the defense struggled with back ups in, and nothing about this matchup makes me think the performance this week will be any different.
Final Thoughts
Again, the late game performance of Houston’s defense comes into question. That question being, if Ta’amu was still in the game would Houston still have won? This team has failed to be competitive in the later part of the game for at least three weeks now. While the offense is half of the issue the fingers need to be pointed at the defense as well. They were the ones making game changing plays but as of recent, they’ve been a major part of the problem.
